How To Create Dimensional Boxes For Any Size Card

Good morning!

Have you created a dimensional card that you absolutely love and then realize that you don’t have a box that it fits in?  It happens to me all of the time.  I start out planning to make a standard size card and then wind up with something totally different. Well, I have the perfect formula to create a card box for any size card you make.  Measure your card and then add 2 1/4 inches to that measurement and cut your cardstock for the box bottom.  For the box top, cut your cardstock about 1/16” larger than the bottom.

I created this Celebrate The Season Foldout pocket card using the Celebrate the Season Collection. See how to make a Foldout pocket card here

For this 6” x 7 1/2” card, add the 2 1/4” to each measurement and cut the cardstock for the box bottom at 8 1/4” x 9 3/4”. Add 1/16” to each measurement and cut the cardstock for the top at 8 5/16” x 9 13/16”. TIP: Don’t get too technical here. As long as the top is just slightly larger than the bottom, it will fit perfectly.

Use the Scor Pal and score the cardstock at 1” on all four sides.

Use a scissor to cut a slit in each corner.

Again using a scissor, angle each corner to create tabs.

Fold on all of the score lines and burnish with the bone folder.

Use Dries Clear Adhesive on all of the tabs and adhere the tabs on the inside. Use clips to hold the tabs closed until the glue dries.

There are so many ways to decorate these boxes and here are just a few.

Sample number 1: Cut paper from the Celebrate the Season collection as follows: one piece 6” x 7 1/2”, two strips 7/8” x 7 1/2” and two strips 7/8” x 6”. Ink the edges with Teal Zeal Ink and adhere to the top and sides of the box top with dries clear adhesive. Use a Quickie Glue pen to trace the design on the poinsettias and leaves and add Crystal Ultrafine Transparent Glitter. This simple design is perfect to slide into a padded envelope for mailing.

Sample number 2: (Wait to fold and adhere the corners on this one so that you’ll be able to run it through your die cutting machine.) Cut paper from the Celebrate the Season collection as follows: one piece 6” x 7 1/2”, two strips 7/8” x 7 1/2” and two strips 7/8” x 6”, one 6’ x 6” card panel from the paper pad and two of the Regal Borders and Pockets. Ink the edges with Teal Zeal Ink and adhere to the top and sides of the box top with dries clear adhesive. Use the die from Cut Mat Create 1A and run it through your die cutting machine to cut an aperture in the center. Cut a piece of Clear Cardstock 6” x 7” and adhere to the inside of the box to create a window.  Fold at all of the score lines and adhere the corner tabs.

Stamp the leaves of the poinsettias with the Celebrate the Season and the the Ornate Sleigh Cling Stamp Sets using Teal Zeal Ink, color with Teal Zeal using the Stack and Store Daubers, cut with the coordinating die and shape using the Deluxe Flower Shaping Kit. Stamp the Poinsettias from the Celebrate the Season and the Ornate Sleigh Cling Stamp sets with Sweet Plum Ink, color with Sweet Plum and Lilac Posies, cut with the coordinating dies and shape using the Deluxe Flower Shaping Kit. Adhere two of the same size petals together and then adhere to the leaves. Add a little Dries Clear Adhesive to the flower centers and sprinkle with Minnie Pearls Prills. Use a sponge to add adhesive to all of the petals and leaves and glitter with Rajni Chawla’s Crystal Clear.

Sample number 3: Cut paper from the Celebrate the Season collection as follows: one piece 6” x 7 1/2”, two strips 7/8” x 7 1/2” and two strips 7/8” x 6”. Ink the edges with Teal Zeal Ink and adhere to the top and sides of the box top with dries clear adhesive. Use the Ornate Sleigh and Presents dies to cut the sleigh and presents from the paper pad.

Use the Cut Mat Create 1A die to cut the sentiment from the paper pad. Use the Luggage and Tags Die to cut the tags from the paper collection. Ink the edges of the sleigh, presents and tags with Teal Zeal and ink the edges of the sentiment with Lilac Posies. Add Crystal Ultrafine Transparent Glitter to all. Add ribbon to the tags and adhere everything to the box top with dimensional dots. Add Poinsettias as shown.  (See sample 2 to learn how to create the poinsettias)

Remember this simple formula for creating your boxes (Measure your finished card and cut your cardstock 2 1/4” inches larger for the bottom and 1/16 larger than that for the top) and have fun creating all size cards because now you can also create a beautiful box to present the card to the lucky recipient. TIP: These are also great to use for those “hard to find the right size” gift boxes.

Thank you for stopping by and have a beautiful day!
